How Alongside Works

Alongside is a free, gentle app for anyone caring for a loved one in palliative care. No downloads, no sign-up, nothing to learn. Here's a simple walkthrough of everything it does — and how to use it on the hardest days.

When you're caring for someone who is seriously ill, the last thing you need is a complicated app. Alongside was built to be the opposite: warm, quiet, and simple. You open it, and everything you need is one tap away. Let's walk through each part.

Getting started

There's nothing to install and no account to create. You just open the app in your browser and start using it. If you'd like it to feel like a real app on your phone, you can add it to your home screen:

You can also switch the whole app between English and Spanish anytime, using the ES / EN toggle at the top.

The six things Alongside helps you with

Tasks & errands

Keep every to-do in one place, sorted into Medical, Admin, and Shopping. Tap "+ Add task" to add your own, check things off as you go, and filter by category so nothing slips through the cracks.

Medication

A clear list of each medication with its time, dose, and instructions. Mark each one as taken — a counter shows "X of Y taken today" so you always know what's left. Add new medications with the "+ Add medication" button.

Activities together

The heart of Alongside. First, choose how your loved one feels today (resting, sitting up, or moving). Then you'll see gentle, science-backed activities — a memory question, favorite music, old photos, breathing together. After each one, write a note about what happened: what they said, the song you played, the story they told.

Emotional support — a space for you

Caring for someone is exhausting. This is a private space just for you: note how you're feeling, and write freely in a journal that no one else can see. It lives only on your device. There are also gentle resources for hard moments.

Medical records

Keep prescriptions, test results, and medical history one tap away. You create a folder in your own Google Drive, paste its link into Alongside once, and from then on you can open all your documents instantly. Your files stay in your Drive — Alongside only saves the link.

A moment of calm

A quiet space for prayer or stillness — choose a Christian or non-religious source of comfort. No pressure; it's there only if you need it.

The memory of the day

This is the part families treasure most. After you've shared some activities and written your notes, tap "Export memory of the day." Alongside creates a beautiful PDF with the date, the activities you shared, the notes you wrote, and a gentle closing message.

Do it a few times and you'll have a diary of your last days together — a tangible, priceless keepsake of the moments that mattered.

Your privacy, simply put: Your journal, notes, and lists live only on your device — not on any server. Your medical documents stay in your own Drive. Alongside never sees or stores your files. It's free, with no ads and no sign-up.

How to start, in three steps

1 Open the app and add today's tasks and medications.

2 Choose how your loved one feels, and share one activity together.

3 Write a note about it — and at the end of the day, export your memory PDF.

That's it. You don't have to use every part. Even one small moment of connection is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to download it or sign up?

No. Alongside opens in your browser — nothing to download, no account. You can add it to your phone's home screen if you'd like it to open like a normal app.

Is my information private?

Yes. Your journal, notes, and lists are stored only on your own device. Your medical documents stay in your own Google Drive — Alongside only saves the link and never sees your files.

What is the memory PDF?

After you do activities together and write notes, Alongside can export a beautiful PDF of the day — the activities and what your loved one said — so those moments become a keepsake you keep forever.
